What is an air con recharge

Recharging the air conditioning in your car is a job best left to a trained mechanic because it involves the refrigerant that powers the air con system.  This is a gas that needs to be refilled periodically so that the system can create the cool air and blow it out to the car interior.

There are also other elements in the system that can benefit from a service.  For example, the system pulls in air from the outside to put through the refrigerant and cool.  It also has special systems to remove any impurities or debris before blowing it out into the car.  These elements can all benefit from a service occasionally to make sure they can work properly.

Air conditioning and MOTs

The condition of the air con in your car isn’t part of the MOT.  That’s because it isn’t a critical system or a part of the car’s safety – it just makes driving more pleasant.  Air con recharging isn’t included in a standard service either for much the same reason.  But it is an extra service you can add and is worth doing, even if you rarely use your air conditioning.
